Quick Overview

Use a waterproof visual schedule, incorporating the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), to enhance adaptive swim lessons by providing visual support throughout the lesson plan.

How Does It Work?

This aids in communication and comprehension for participants, allowing for a smoother learning experience. Over time, the goal is to gradually reduce reliance on visual supports as swimmers gain confidence and proficiency in the water.

Materials Needed

  1. PECS Images
  2. Scissors
  3. 9 x Laminating sheets
  4. Hot Laminator (if using)
  5. Kickboard
  6. Mesh Bag

Tips

  1. Once wet, they easily stick to a kick board.
  2. Store all laminated PECS pictures inside your mesh bag.
  3. Do not store in a closed container as they may not dry properly!

PECS Note

This Visual Schedule resource is meant to support your lesson, not act as the learning tool. The images depicted may not represent the exact technique. Using these PECS photos to create a swim lesson plan can provide visual support for some or all of a session. Eventually, you will want to decrease visual supports when possible.

Instructions

Step One
Download and print the PDF

Step Two
Using scissors, cut out the PECS Pictures into individual squares.

Step Three
Place the squares in the laminating sheets (6 squares to a sheet) leaving at least a quarter inch space between each picture.
TIP You need that space to create a watertight seal around each picture.

Step Four
Send through hot laminator (if using hot laminate), press together (if using cold).
TIP Go to your local office supply store (like Kinkos or Staples) to have them laminate.

Step Five
Using a paper cutter or scissors, cut around each square, leaving a little bit of laminate around each edge.

Now you are ready to use your PECS! Watch your adaptive swimming lessons transform!
