Swim Angelfish Partners with LOF Adaptive Skiers for an Inclusive Day of Adaptive Water Skiing

There’s something truly special about watching someone experience the freedom of gliding across the water.

Swim Angelfish was honored to once again partner with LOF Adaptive Skiers for an incredible day of adaptive water skiing, bringing participants, families, instructors, and volunteers together for a day filled with adventure, encouragement, and celebration.

From first-time skiers experiencing water skiing for the first time to returning participants building on skills they had developed previously, the day was about so much more than getting up on skis. It was an opportunity to experience the water in a new way, challenge expectations, and discover what is possible when the right support is in place.

Creating Opportunities for Adaptive Water Sports

Adaptive water skiing gives individuals with disabilities the opportunity to participate in an exciting recreational activity that may otherwise feel out of reach. With adaptive equipment, experienced instructors, and individualized support, participants can experience the excitement of being pulled across the water while working toward their own goals.

For some participants, that meant getting on the water for the very first time. For others, it meant returning to a sport they love and continuing to build their skills.Throughout the day, participants were supported by instructors and volunteers who helped create an environment where everyone could participate at their own pace.

Every attempt, milestone, and successful run was met with encouragement and celebration.

Making the Water Accessible

Creating an inclusive aquatic experience involves more than what happens once someone is in the water. For some individuals, getting safely and comfortably into the water can be one of the biggest barriers to participation.

For participants who needed additional assistance getting into the water, we used the Perfect Lift to provide supportive access to the water. The Perfect Lift can help make transfers easier in aquatic environments and give individuals greater access to recreational opportunities that might otherwise be difficult to participate in.

Supporting swimmers in adaptive aquatic environments also means considering how they safely and comfortably get both into and out of the water. And once the activity is over, having a plan for safely getting a swimmer back out of the water is just as important.

With the right support, equipment, and adaptations, more individuals with disabilities can experience the freedom, fun, and sense of accomplishment that come from being on the water.

More Than Just Water Skiing

One of the most meaningful parts of adaptive recreation is seeing how quickly an activity can become about much more than the activity itself.

Adaptive water skiing creates opportunities to:

  • Build confidence through new experiences and challenges.

  • Develop independence by participating in an exciting recreational activity.

  • Experience success with individualized support and adaptive equipment.

  • Connect with others through shared experiences and encouragement.

For some participants, simply getting on the water was a milestone. For others, each successful run represented another step toward greater confidence and independence.

And for families, watching their loved one experience the excitement of water skiing, and seeing what they can accomplish with the right support, can be just as meaningful.

A Community Coming Together

This event would not have been possible without the incredible people who came together to make it happen.

A heartfelt thank you to the LOF Adaptive Skiers team, instructors, volunteers, families, and everyone who helped create such a welcoming and supportive experience for participants.

Their passion, patience, and dedication helped make the day possible and gave every participant the opportunity to experience the excitement of adaptive water skiing. The encouragement throughout the day was contagious. Participants celebrated one another’s accomplishments, families shared in the excitement, and volunteers helped create an environment where everyone felt supported.

That sense of community is what makes adaptive recreation so special. When people come together to remove barriers and create opportunities, the possibilities can expand far beyond what someone may have initially thought was possible.

Celebrating What’s Possible

At Swim Angelfish, we believe aquatic experiences should be accessible to people of all abilities. Adaptive aquatics can help build water safety, confidence, swimming skills, and independence, while recreational opportunities like adaptive water skiing allow individuals to experience the freedom and joy of being active on the water.

Creating access doesn’t end when the event is over. Families can continue building water safety skills at home with resources like our Adaptive Water Safety Toolkit and All Abilities Water Safety Activity Book, which offer practical strategies, visual supports, and hands-on activities to make learning about water safety more accessible and engaging.

For professionals creating more inclusive experiences, our Strategies for Inclusion Success short course offers practical tips for supporting individuals with different needs. And for summer programs and camps, our Preparing Your Staff for Camp & Inclusion Success webinar can help staff feel more prepared and confident.

Days like this remind us why creating access matters. Everyone deserves the opportunity to try something new, build confidence, create memories, and experience the joy of being on the water.

We are incredibly grateful to everyone who helped make this adaptive water ski day so memorable, and we’re already looking forward to next year.
