Swim Angelfish at USSSA: National Conference Recap

We were absolutely thrilled to be diving back into the USSSA National Conference this year!

For the first time in ten years, we re-joined the action and were met with a powerful wave of information and inspiration. And speaking of highlights, our own Cindy Freedman, MOTR, was honored to step up as one of the expert speakers at the event, where she powerfully highlighted the critical importance of adaptive water safety for all swimmers with special needs.

From a deep dive into the learning outcomes from Cindy’s session to our favorite Exhibit Hall shenanigans, take a moment to see what this impactful conference offered the aquatic community!

Conference Highlights: The Sessions That Stood Out

The energy at the USSSA conference was infectious, and we were fortunate to sit in on several sessions that provided valuable, actionable takeaways. Here are two presentations that truly made a splash:

Secrets to Scale: Funding Your Mission

The energy in the room was palpable during the Paulana Lamonier (founder of Black People Will Swim) session. This was a phenomenal, hour-long masterclass focused on grant writing and sustainable funding. The speaker’s energy, outfit, and content were so organized and breathtaking that you couldn’t help but be engaged for the entire 60 minutes. We learned exactly how to keep the money flowing year after year by leveraging powerful video testimonials, vital statistics, and the sheer passion that your school has for its mission. It was wonderful to connect with the team afterwards; their incredible work is creating a massive impact within the Black and broader communities of color, directly addressing alarming statistics in aquatic safety.

Steve Cook: Mastering Partnerships and Sponsorships

Have you heard of this guy? Steve Cook delivered a powerful, organized presentation on Partnerships, Sponsorships, and Collaborative Promotion. He broke down how to keep track of these relationships and maximize the value they bring to both parties in a highly engaging presentation format. This session was invaluable for thinking about how we all work together to promote each other’s business in a well-thought-out way. I went so far as to sign up for his consulting and got a signed copy of his book, The Playmaker’s Playbook.

Adaptive Water Safety: Leading the Conversation

Of course, the pinnacle of the conference for the Swim Angelfish team was hosting our own session on Adaptive Water Safety.

Our room was full of dedicated swim school owners and instructors, all united by a single, urgent mission: learning how to reduce the alarming statistic that children with autism are 160 times more likely to drown than their typical peers. The collective passion and dedication to learning about this topic were truly inspiring.

Additionally, we held a group brainstorm on the topic of ‘What is Adaptive Aquatics?” and featured a video of several different types of learners. The consensus was that we are all seeing swimmers of all ages in our learn to swim programs having sensory sensitivities, anxiety and motor challenges. We agreed this is a broad term that includes any swimmer that is having difficulty with traditional swim curriculum and needs a different approach.

A huge thank you to everyone who chose the Swim Angelfish presentation—we appreciate you making the commitment to be there. Our professional training courses will complement the resources and drive that this audience already possesses to keep all children safe in the water.

A Buzz in the Exhibit Hall: Connections and Conversation

Moving from the session rooms to the Exhibit Hall was a high point, as the space provided an excellent flow for vendors, food, and incredible opportunities for collaboration.

The Swim Angelfish Booth

Our booth was constantly flooded with people. Cindy found it inspiring to see so many swim school owners and instructors dedicated to growth, eager to learn how to improve their existing adaptive aquatics offerings or initiate new private, semi-private, and small group classes.

The booth naturally became the central hub for the vibrant community of Adaptive Swim Whisperer certified instructors from around the US. This supportive crew brought laughter and camaraderie, passionately sharing with attendees how the certification had improved their programs.

Cindy was deeply appreciative of their constant support. These instructors served as ambassadors—rallied around anyone curious about adaptive training and water safety, and enthusiastically directed them back to the booth. Their dedication made traveling without Ailene manageable, as they spread the news about how the training has fueled the growth of their own swim schools and the larger Swim Angelfish mission.

Key Take-Away

The energy and high traffic underscored a clear reality: learn-to-swim programs worldwide are seeing an increasing number of swimmers with sensory sensitivities, ASD, and other needs.

Ultimately, showing swim schools how our specialized training offers the essential skills and support to meet this growing demand, proved to be the most satisfying part of the conference.

Vendor Highlights & Opportunities

Beyond our own booth, the connections we made with other organizations were invaluable:

  • We loved catching up with our partners at Stop Drowning Now, whose dedication to water safety is unparalleled.
  • We spent time with Every Child a Swimmer, discussing the importance of providing every child of any ability the chance to learn life-saving swim skills. Our Swim Whisperers certification course and other professional training are part of a solution to ensure aquatic professionals have the skills they need.
  • The team at Dolfin Swim Wear delighted attendees (especially our Adaptive Swim Whisperers graduates who attended the event!) by quickly designing custom suits, including one with bright pink fish right before our eyes.
  • We loved what Aqua Mentor could create. We were particularly impressed with the ability to produce branded puzzle pieces, bathtub safety kits, and the perfect thing for Swim Angelfish – pink rescue tubes! These products are ideal for helping our swimmers familiarize themselves with safety equipment. Stay tuned as we explore this opportunity!
  • Our friends at Finis were right across the aisle, and we had great conversations about products like the Booster Fins. If you haven’t tried them, check them out! They assist with horizontal swimming and can improve a productive kick by providing awareness, especially for swimmers with special needs.

Tides are Changing!

The 2025 USSSA National Conference was an overwhelmingly positive and inspiring experience for the Swim Angelfish team. The collaborative spirit highlighted the rapidly accelerating demand for adaptive training worldwide.

Cindy left energized by the new opportunities and future projects we have in the pipeline to better support our dedicated Adaptive Swim Whisperers community and the swimmers they serve.

Finally, a massive congratulations is due to our good friend, Rose Cholewinski (Swim America Davis), on her exciting new role as the President of the USSSA Board of Directors! We look forward to seeing the incredible leadership she brings to the organization.

Thank you to USSSA for an unforgettable event.
